Buy Side

Buy-side functions relate primarily to investing in traded instruments for profit, whether for one’s self or as a service for others. The activities of the buy-side front office include investing, supporting customers directly, and acquiring new customers. The middle-office activities of the buy side include accounting for customers and their holdings as well as regulatory reporting and compliance as it regards customers. The backoffice manages securities positions and supports the completion of trades. These functions are shown in Figure 4.2.
