Introduction

In most countries, the entities that operate in the traded-instrument markets are highly regulated commercial organizations with some activities required and others prohibited. In the past 20 years, however, the unique characteristics of individual firms in many countries have blurred as entities such as banks and broker/dealers have been allowed to merge with one another. National characteristics and differences have also been diluted as large numbers of firms have merged across national borders, or as firms have won the right to register in other countries.
