that permit a total of as many as one million additional characters. Unicode is continually
evolving. Unicode 3.0 included 49,194 characters, covering virtually all languages in
modern use and many historical languages as well. Unicode 5.0 specified over 100,000
characters. Unicode fully incorporates ASCII encoding as well as several other national
and international standards.
The goal of the Unicode project is to define “a consistent
way of encoding multilingual text that enables the exchange of
text data internationally and creates the foundation for global
software” (Unicode, 2001, 1). Unicode has
