Recently, Marshall Breeding identified a number of powerful factors driving a transition to enterprise computing for libraries. These factors include security, scalability, better redundancy and backup of critical systems, and basic economics. It is far more cost-effective to build one enterprise-scale infrastructure to handle organizational computing requirements than it is to replicate that infrastructure on a smaller scale throughout a single organization.
