The genesis for this book came when Doug Dow, Vice President, Business Analytics Transformation, observed that a number of good analytics books were being published, written by experts in analytics, and that IBM had experts with significant experience solving business problems by applying analytics. Dow approached Brenda Dietrich, an IBM Fellow and an eminent operations research and analytics expert. Dietrich was receptive to the idea but was reluctant to sign up to write the book alone. Dow later approached two of his Business Analytics Transformation department members, Emily Plachy and Maureen Norton, who both jumped at the chance to tell IBM’s story.
