INDEXING AND TABULATING THE DATA

The previous chapter described creating informative lists or reports on the data. This chapter describes a more elaborate process for tabulating data. The reason for doing this is three-fold. By assembling our data into a tabulated format, we can more easily interpret and comprehend the results. Second, the table format used enables us to build more complex queries than is otherwise possible with a simple top 10 list. And finally, these tables serve as input to statistics and machine-learning procedures. These techniques provide new insights into the data that could not otherwise be obtained without careful tabulation of the data.
