Estonia

The Estonian studio Tallinnfilm opened in September 1957, under the direction of puppet animator Elbert Tuganov (Baku, Azerbaijan, 22 February 1920–Tallinn, Estonia, 22 March 2007). He had studied cinema and photography in Berlin before World War II; in 1946, he joined Estonia’s state film studio, Tallinnfilm. For eleven years he drew, painted and shot titles and credit sequences.

During this time, he also built an animation stand that let the studio do frame-by-frame shooting. A visiting Moscow official was impressed by the new apparatus, and suggested that Tuganov make animation films.
