Updating data

In this recipe, you will learn how to update data in a table in Hive.

Updating data in a Hive table is the traditional way of updating data in a table in any RDBMS. Updating data in a table can only be performed if the table supports Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, Durability (ACID) properties. The general format of updating data in a table is as follows:

UPDATE tablename SET column = value [, column = value ...] [WHERE expression]

Where:

  • tablename: This is the name of the table
  • values_row: This is the value that is to be inserted into the table.
  • WHERE expression: This is an optional clause. Only rows that match the WHERE clause will be updated
