Where next for scaling Solr?

While Solr offers some impressive scaling techniques through replication and sharding of data, it assumes that you know a priori what your scaling needs are. The distributed search of Solr doesn't adapt to real time changes in indexing or query load and doesn't provide any fail-over support. SolrCloud is an ongoing effort to build a fault tolerant, centrally managed support for clusters of Solr instances and is part of the trunk development path (Solr 4.0).
