In many ways, the story of Newton is very similar to that of Macintosh.
Like the Mac before it, the Newton was created largely to satisfy the desire
of its designers to own a revolutionary device that only they could conceive.
As with the Mac, Newton development began as a small, ill-dened project
and grew into a division that some hoped—and many feared—would
change the face of Apple forever. The Newton relied heavily on unproven
technology and was targeted at new markets, in much the same way that
the Mac popularized many computing innovations in an effort to become
