After demanding that Gilbert F. Amelio resign as CEO and chairman on
July 5, 1997, Apple’s board turned to part-time advisor Steve Jobs and asked
him to take over as CEO. “I thought about it, but decided it wasn’t what
I wanted to do with my life,” Jobs later revealed. “I declined, but agreed to
step up my involvement with Apple for up to 90 days, helping them until
they hire a new CEO.” The board then asked Jobs to be chairman, which
he also refused to accept. “I agreed to be a board member, and that’s all I
