11 Optical Transmitters
In a typical optical transmitter design, the first consideration will most likely be the choice of a particular light source. Usually, this choice can only be made after careful consideration of receiver requirements such as responsivity and bandwidth. Optical receiver components and their typical applications will be covered in Chapters 12 and 13. In this chapter, we will be concerned with the applications involving two basic semiconductor light sources, the LED and the diode laser.
