Chapter 11. Extensional Structures: Balancing and Interpretation

Introduction

In the first edition of this text we mentioned that the balancing of extensional structures was in the initial stages of development. Since then, several major oil companies have successfully applied extensional balancing concepts in the northern Gulf of Mexico, Nigeria, Indonesia and elsewhere (Dula 1991; Nunns 1991; Withjack et al. 1995; Shaw et al. 1997). Accordingly, we now have a higher degree of confidence in extensional structural and balancing methods and techniques. As with compressional structural geology and balancing, a common theme to this chapter is the relationship between hanging wall fold geometry and fault geometry.
