Underwater acoustics is one of the fastest growing fields of research and development in acoustics. This is reflected by the increasing number of publications each year in international journals and conference proceedings. The relations between underwater acoustics and other fields of importance to the international community such as oceanography, meteorology, seismology, fishery, oil and gas industry, communication, shipping, defense, and security are becoming closer. The comprehensive activity in underwater acoustics is based on research and development over more than two millennia, spawned by human curiosity about the sea and its ability to support sound wave propagation.
