10.9. Sonar System Example Calculations
This section provides examples of how to use the sonar equations in passive and active operations with the sonar systems described in the previous sections.
Example 10.9.1
Can a target be detected by a vertical hydrophone array using a broadband square law detector under the following conditions?
• The hydrophone array has N = 11 elements with an element center-to-center distance equal to λ/2 at 1 kHz.
• The ambient noise level is 65 dB rel 1 μPa at 1 kHz.
• The detection and false-alarm probabilities are assumed to have the values Pd = 70% and Pfa = 1%.
