Non-Structural Wood Applications

The tables in this part give some commonly needed reference data for non-structural uses of wood. First, there is a method of calculating deflection so the correct size and thickness of shelving can be determined. This is especially important in interior design applications. A table is also provided for quick determination of shelving dimensions for common construction types.

In addition Table 4D–3 can assist you in preliminary selection of hardwood for various interior finish applications. From this table you can determine what species of wood is appropriate for common uses and its availability, appearance, and relative cost.
