In the early planning stages of a project, the architect often knows very little about the detailed functioning of a building. Typically, he or she will know only the building type and its approximate area. From this limited data, more information must be derived in order to begin making preliminary decisions concerning such things as site coverage, gross area, number of floors in the building, parking area requirements, and similar concerns.
