Design techniques that employ scripting look to mathematical rules to generate formal solutions to complex design problems. To do this, the design process can be broken down into an algorithm. The algorithm can be understood as a procedure by which something is made, a sequence of instructions, or a method statement. Algorithmic design allows us to model concepts. Modeling in this way encapsulates information about the nature of a design in which relationships are relative.
The following case studies illustrate examples of algorithmic approaches to architectural design and the role of drawing within them. When using algorithms, the designer is designing the methods and processes.
