While it may be tempting to pick up the basic tools and immediately start the process of making a model, it is worth considering one’s objectives first. Making a model can be a highly creative way of designing a building, and a pleasurable activity in its own right, but the purpose of the model should be identified from the outset in order to maximize the results, given the limitations on time, materials, and effort.
