Contemporary design
It’s easy to assess design from the past. We can glance at a book cover and tell if it was designed in the 1930s, the 1960s, or the 1990s. We can recognize a poster from the Jazz Age, and spot an 18th century portrait. But when it comes to the design of today, it’s much harder to pin down.
It’s partly that what has survived from the past, in recognizable form, is the very best – or the most typical of the period. There was probably as much variety in art and design a hundred years ago as there is today; but much of it was so ephemeral that it hasn’t lasted the course.
