An editor’s most critical relationship is with the director. This chapter explores the working methodologies, social interaction and the development of a deep sense of trust that is necessary in a healthy collaborative environment.

One of the key elements of this collaboration is reliance on a personal connection, an ability to navigate the political environment and an understanding of the need for social skills. So much of this book is dedicated to the creative, technical and organizational skills necessary to succeed as an editor, but for years I’ve talked to many colleagues about the fact that equal to—or even surpassing—the artistic skill of the successful editor are his or her social skills.
