altering the working ground

When the working surface is built up, layers of texture, pattern and shape become more than they appear to be. The context in which they are placed transforms the textural environment into something more profound. Throughout this demonstration, artist Kazuhiko Sano uses gesso, modeling paste, acrylic, colored pencil and graphite to create an imaginative and visually expressive portrait of the singer and songwriter Tori Amos.

MATERIALS

Raw cotton duck canvas: 18" × 24" (26cm × 61cm)

Tempered Masonite: 1/8" (3mm)

White gesso

Acrylic paints: heavy body

Modeling paste

Acrylic matte medium

Fixative

Rubbing alcohol

Graphite pencils: 2H, HB, 2B and 5B
