2Integrating AI With Tissue Engineering: The Next Step in Bone Regeneration

Abstract

A branch of regenerative medicine called tissue engineering uses developments in biomaterial and stem cell research to support the body’s natural healing processes. Three main elements that are required for tissue engineering are cells, growth agents, and a scaffold material. Metal, ceramic, or polymer scaffolds can be built to support bone regeneration. Many biomaterials have been tried with a wide variety of different cell types. An overview of contemporary approaches to bone regeneration is given in this chapter, with a focus on tissue engineering techniques that involve the fusion of diverse biomaterials with cells and growth hormones. Two of the many unanswered concerns in tissue engineering are the lack of an appropriate understanding of stem cells and the requirement for better biomaterial designs. Deep learning and artificial intelligence (AI) have the potential to improve the therapeutic outcomes and scientific understanding of regenerative medicine. This powerful technology will be even more effective at improving patient health outcomes with a better knowledge of how to apply AI to ongoing research and clinical practice.
