Arithmetic is the area of mathematics that involves making computations with real numbers. These computations are done using four basic operations: addition, subtraction,
*multiplication*, and division. Let's begin our review with the alphabet of arithmetic: numbers. Table 2.1 provides a refresher on the various types of number sets you will encounter. Take a moment now to review the differences between each set of numbers so that on the test you won't have to stop to think what is meant by a “real number” or an “integer” before solving a problem.

Name of Set | Definition | Examples |
---|---|---|

Natural numbers | The counting numbers (that is, positive integers) | 1,2,3,4… |

Whole numbers | The natural numbers and zero | 0,1,2,3,4… ... |
