There are many different ways to classify the variety of engines that are in operation today, for both legacy and current automotive designs. The following are ways to commonly classify engines:
Number of strokes/cycles
Number of cylinders
Arrangement of cylinders
Arrangement of valves
Combustion chamber shape
We will examine each of these classifications throughout the rest of this chapter.
The combustion, or ignition, of the air-fuel mixture can take place either inside or outside the engine.
