Engine Classifications

Now that we have covered the preliminaries, let's discuss the construction and purpose of the different automotive systems, starting with the engine.

There are many different ways to classify the variety of engines that are in operation today, for both legacy and current automotive designs. The following are ways to commonly classify engines:

  • Combustion type

  • Number of strokes/cycles

  • Number of cylinders

  • Arrangement of cylinders

  • Arrangement of valves

  • Combustion chamber shape

  • Ignition method

  • Cooling system

  • Carburetion methods

We will examine each of these classifications throughout the rest of this chapter.
