Chapter 8. Cisco Catalyst Switches
Deploying IP telephony requires planning how the IP phones will be powered and how the voice network will be combined with the data network, while ensuring voice calls maintain high quality.
Cisco Catalyst switches provide three primary features that aid an IP telephony deployment: in-line power, voice VLANs, and class of service (CoS). Power over Ethernet (PoE) can save on wiring costs and simplify management. Multiple VLANs must be enabled on a port because voice and data packets are placed on different VLANs. The dual-VLAN access port approach saves money by reducing the number of switch ports necessary for the deployment.
