Causes and Contributing Factors

The basis for all human traits and conditions can be understood in terms of genetics, environment, or a combination of both. Thousands of diseases are known to be caused solely by genetics. Patterns of disease inheritance arise from simple rules for the transmission of genes from one generation to the next. Examples include cystic fibrosis, which is caused by inheritance of two faulty copies of the CFTR gene, sickle cell disease, which results from the inheritance of two faulty copies of the HBB gene, and Huntington’s disease, which is caused by mutation of the HTT gene.
