How to: Change the Engine Oil

Changing your own engine oil is a good way to save money, but before you begin, check local regulations to make sure it’s legal for you to do it yourself. Recycling oil is a must, and items like the used filter may require proper disposal. Your local auto parts dealer will have information about regulations in your area and may be able to recycle used oil, too. Finally, keep in mind that changing oil is a messy job and your filter may be difficult to access. Be prepared to get dirty.

Oil recommended by your manufacturer

Oil filter appropriate for your car

Paper towels

Oil pan

Tool to remove the oil drain plug (usually a wrench)

Jack and jack stands (if needed)
