Access Web Applications from the Server

Before we create our first Site Collection and root-level Site, we must pause and discuss an important concept. SharePoint 2010 requires Windows Server 2008 as its operating system. One of the security features that comes along with this is the loop-back check. Windows Server will prevent access to a Web Application that is using a fully qualified domain name (FQDN) if the request originates from the host machine. If you create a SharePoint Site Collection with a root site and try to access it from the server, you will be prompted to enter your credentials three times and you will receive a blank page. This is because behind the scenes, you just received an access denied 401.1 error.
