COMBUSTION SENSORS

Peter Eastwood

1. INTRODUCTION

After more than a century of development, internal combustion engine technology may be considered mature. One view is that conventional powertrains are probably approaching the limits of refinement and may not be able to satisfy increasingly strict environmental legislation. Powertrains using fuel cells or other technology may be preferred in the future.

There is an alternative vision, which predicts many years of further development for the internal combustion (IC) engine. Modern signal processing techniques, microprocessors, neural networks, fuzzy logic, adaptive control, and smart sensors are all being used to enhance environmental performance.
