4.1. Creating a Clear, Intended Outcome

One of my favorite scenes in Alice in Wonderland is when Alice comes to the fork in the road and asks the smiling Cheshire Cat which road she should take. The cat says to Alice, "That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," to which Alice says, "Oh, it really doesn't matter." That cat's famous reply is, "Then it doesn't matter which way you go."

Because I have seen so many businesses that operate exactly this way, some of my consulting colleagues and I developed a small mathematical equation to describe this conundrum:
