For several years, I have been a guest lecturer on strategic thinking and the fundamentals of strategic planning during a special leadership institute at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business. Most years, between 100 and 130 senior executives attend my session, and I always ask the same question: "What percentage of the time do you feel organizations that have clear plans and goals and understand what they are trying to accomplish in the marketplace actually execute those plans effectively?" Year after year the answer has been the exact same: 10 to 15 percent.
