During the past decade, I have had the honor of teaching a series of advanced programs for employees at a number of organizations who have been selected as having high potential. In companies with tens of thousands of employees, such as Pepsi, Alltel, Abbott Labs, and State Farm Insurance, the senior management team hand-picked a small group of those they felt held great promise as the organization's future leaders and sent them through an intense executive development program to prepare them for the next levels of their careers.
