Archiving data, the act of moving it from expensive high-speed storage to low-cost, low-speed storage, used to be an act akin to moving paper files from an office to the basement. Someone might use those files sometime, in some way, some day, but not today and possibly not ever. Today, however, archives take on added important because the methods available for analyzing data keep improving. Data that may not have held any new secrets yesterday may suddenly hold useful information today, so archiving is no longer the process of potentially putting data away forever — more a means of putting it away for now.
