SPEAKER POWER RATINGS

One of the prime factors in choosing a speaker is the power range in which it is required to operate. Amplifier power applied to a speaker is greatly misunderstood, so power rating needs definition. The real limit of a speaker’s power handling capacity is the level at which it starts to produce a non-linear output. Even if it will survive a higher drive level without damage, there is no point in pushing it beyond the level where it starts to sound bad.

Most audio program, the real sound we listen to, has an average power representing about 70 percent of its peak value, so it is clear that the method of rating the speaker has to be stated. Without more exactly specifying the type of signal, a 60 watt ...
