The Challenge
Prologue Think Badass The User Journey
Just for clarity: let’s assume we’re talking about users who do
want to be better but don’t want to go all the way to Chuck
Norris of X. (Not yet anyway.) If they don’t want to be better
at all, that’s a different issue, and one we won’t spend time
worrying about.
We assume that at least some initial motivation–a desire to
become better at the bigger context–is already there. While the
initial spark of motivation is rarely a problem, the big challenge
is helping that tiny spark become a sustainable ame.
By treating users as if they were trying to be badass, we help
all users build higher resolution abilities. We don’t create a
separate “good but not expert” path. It’s all one path, and some
go further than others.
If you’re worried users will be intimidated by a path-to-badass
when they “just want to be good enough to get something
done,” the solution is simple: just tell them. Let them know
that the early steps are the same no matter how far up the
expertise curve they want to go.
(We’ll look at motivation much more deeply later in the book.)
You didn’t answer the question. Why
should they work on being badass if they
don’t want to actually be badass?
