Glossary
Active homing: A method of guidance whereby the device is guided by electronics that
contain both a transmitter and receiver, so that the munition can be adjusted onto
the target.
Autofrettage: A process by which the inner layer of material in a gun tube is yielded plas-
tically and held in compression by the outer layer. This increases the fatigue life of
the weapon by limiting the cyclic stress amplitude during repeated rings.
Autonomous munition: A munition that needs no input from an outside source once red.
Azimuth: The rotation of a weapon about the pintle or turret ring (side to side) as opposed
to elevation (q.v.
