4.9 Projectile Design
While propulsion systems are fairly straightforward in design because their intended use
is simple, projectiles vary widely in use and as a consequence their designs are complex
and demanding. The propulsion system must get the projectile through the launch envi-
ronment with consistent muzzle velocities, but without undue stress to the gun or the
projectile. The projectile, on the other hand, must withstand the forces of launch, be ef-
cient, consistent and precise in its ight environment, and deliver its intended utility at the
