Single Storey Frames, Shells and Lightweight Coverings: Chapter 4 AT A GLANCE

What?

Many industrial and commercial enterprises require a relatively cheap, single storey, clear span structure to house their activities. Single storey frames, shells and their associated lightweight coverings are a familiar feature of industrial and commercial zones. Although exceptions do exist, these buildings tend to be functional, practical and somewhat lacking in aesthetic appeal. Concrete shells and timber glulam buildings offer greater creative freedom compared to steel and concrete frames and tend to be used for buildings that are in more prominent locations and are used by the general public, for example, for recreational purposes.

Why?

Framed buildings are an economical and quick form of construction suited to a variety of industrial and commercial uses. The majority of the materials used for the structural frames can be recovered and reused or recycled at the end of their service life. Walling and roofing materials tend to be selected on (low) cost and usually have a short design life compared to the structural frame. This means that the building envelope may be replaced several times over the life of the building.

When?

Some single storey units may be assembled from prefabricated, off the shelf manufacturers’ systems. Others will be designed to meet specific functional and performance requirements, relying primarily on the assembly of prefabricated components.
