The many different areas of knowledge required for a live audio pro would surprise most people, and even many students already committed to entering the field don’t expect the exact extent knowledge required in one hoping to step into the shoes of a live sound engineer. The duties of the soundman are commonly understood to be relatively straightforward, both by outsiders who see them as being little different than gear mechanics, and by insiders who see them as mechanics who also hop in and drive the machine (like taxi drivers or like race car drivers depends on the outlook of the observer).
