Binary logic (also known as Boolean algebra) is important in computing because the truth values, true and false, can be represented as the binary digits 1 and 0. All integrated circuits are designed using Boolean logic. They respond to the binary patterns they receive, and produce the required outputs as binary patterns. Binary logic influences not only the design of hardware, but also the design of algorithms and programming languages, for example the way a test such as ‘If the month is February and if it is a leap year’ is programmed in a high-level language.
