DAUGHTER OF SUNDAY
Ladi was born around 1925 to a family of potters in the Gwari region of Nigeria. Her name Ladi means “Daughter of Sunday,” and her last name Kwali is the name of the village where she was born. In this village, pottery is an ancient and important tradition for women. When she was a child, Ladi learned from her aunt how to make pots by hand using techniques such as coiling and pinching. She used these skills to make clay containers such as jars, pots, bowls, and jugs. Her talent was well known, and many families proudly displayed her work in their homes.
