Writers starting something new can easily feel as daunted as Frodo Baggins embarking on his quest. But overcoming the terror of the blank page is simply a matter of putting pen to paper.
The carte blanche is a writer’s worst nightmare because it only exists when you haven’t written a single word. It fights a zero sum game with the author – only one of you can win. And it wages a dirty battle of fear and ridicule, telling you it can never be filled, that your book can never match the great classics of literature, that you may as well just give up. But the blank page can be quashed with a simple stroke of your pen.
