JAMES WAS CONFUSED about his future.1 On the surface, he was doing fine and his path was predictable. Having grown up in a poor neighborhood, he had done much better than most of his friends. He had gone to college, gotten one good job after another, and now, as Vice President of information technology (IT) at a midsized company, he was successful and on the high-potential list. James had a loving relationship with his daughters and was prepared to pay for their college tuition. He was divorced, but on amiable terms with his former wife. He had a girlfriend. He was devout in his faith and contributed his time eagerly to church projects. So what was wrong?
