Chapter 9Values in Action

Becoming a best citizen, may look like another one of those nice things that companies can do, from the local merchant who sponsors a little league team, to a multibillion-dollar global enterprise that establishes a foundation to support various causes. With this thinking, we might consider best citizenship as something a company can afford to do because it's done so well with the other four bests (best self, best team, best partner, and best investment). While this perception is, perhaps, understandable, it is nonetheless inaccurate. Rather than being the icing on a corporate cake, becoming a best citizen is a key ingredient in values-based leadership for the individual and the organization.
