Internationalization

A BIT OF TERMINOLOGY

The term internationalization is often used as a very broad and ambiguous term referring to numerous actions, all of which relate to modifying Drupal's core language (English) and its settings. Internationalization generally relates to two activities: localizing and translating. Here are a few terms to help you decipher the lingo of internationalization:

  • Localizing — Refers to the modification of the user interface to the local standards. This may include translating the text used for menus, buttons, links, and administrative screens, or changing the format of dates, times, currency, and so on.

  • Locale — The name of Drupal's core module used for localizing your site.

  • Translation — Translating your site's Articles, Pages, and other added content to a language other than your site's default.

  • Content translation — The name of Drupal's core module that allows you to translate your site's content.

  • i18n — Abbreviation of internationalization, based on the fact that there are 18 letters between the first letter (i) and the last letter (n) of the word. In this book, i18n refers to the contributed module available ...
