Understanding Copyright

When you start working with assets that you use from other authors, you will need to have a basic understanding of trademark, copyright, and licensing. If you are using elements for your game that you have downloaded from the Internet to use in your game, it is important that you fully understand what it means when you use something that is open source.

Copyright should more accurately be called copyrights, and, in most Western countries expressly provide the holder the following exclusive rights.

  • The right to produce copies, or reproductions of the work, and to sell those copies
