Twitter was created in March 2006 by a small team of developers in the San Francisco Bay Area. By 2012 it had more than 500 million registered users with no drop-off in sight. Twitter allows registered users to post short, 140-character messages to their timeline, where followers and the general public can browse them. Apple began making a public push into social networking with iOS 5 when they announced the addition of the Social Framework.
