Appendix A covers the different installation scenarios available and how to set up SharePoint Foundation to work with either SQL Server Express or the full Microsoft SQL Server. This appendix covers more about configuring and managing an installed SharePoint Foundation, including how to activate and configure the search features. To successfully manage the SharePoint Foundation environment, you need to understand important concepts, such as websites, site collections, and the security model. The objective in this appendix is to give you the knowledge needed to set up the WSS environment so that it will match the needs of your users.

Before you start configuring SharePoint Foundation, check to see whether your server has the Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration setting activated. If it is active, you will be prompted several times when opening web pages, including SharePoint's Central Administration tool, which may become annoying. You find this setting in the Server Manager (see Figure B-1), and its Configure IE ESC link in the Security Information section.
