Creating new sites and lists in SharePoint 2010 by using only the browser is an easy task, but most organizations want to customize their look and feel; this is sometimes also referred to as branding or design.
Some of this customization is very easy to do, whereas other modifications require extensive knowledge of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations (XSLT), and general web design expertise to create a sophisticated design with a good portion of web standards and usability.
This chapter gives you the basic information needed to change the design of a SharePoint website. It also describes how to create no-code collaborative solutions in a broad spectrum of business scenarios, like using customized pages with in-built or custom SharePoint web parts, and managing client-side scripts. This chapter also gives you insight into developing a web part with Visual Studio 2010.
Chapter 9 teaches you more about composites, how to use SharePoint Designer 2010 to create a design, and how to customize a SharePoint site or a page.
